At least 28 killed during an Israeli attack in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a school converted into a shelter for displaced people in Gaza has killed at least 28 people, including five children, the Gaza Health Ministry said.

The Israeli military said the strike hit dozens of members of Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — and Islamic Jihad militants, who the military said had gathered at the school.

The attack hit the Abu Hussein school in Jabalia, a refugee camp in northern Gaza where Israel has been conducting a major air and ground operation for more than a week.

The head of the Ministry of Health's emergency unit for northern Gaza, Fares Abu Hamza, confirmed the number of victims. Authorities said almost 100 others were injured.

"Many women and children are in critical condition," he said.

The Israeli military said it targeted a command center it said was operated by militant groups inside the school, providing several names of people it said were militants killed in the attack. The names presented could not be immediately verified.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza./REL
