Hamas confirms the killing of Sinwar

Khalil al-Hayya, senior political leader of Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – confirmed on October 18 the death of the group's leader, Yahya Sinwar.

Through a televised statement, Al-Hayyaa reiterated Hamas' position that it will not release the Israeli hostages that were taken during the October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel.

He said the hostages would not be released until a ceasefire was reached in the war in Gaza.

"These prisoners will not be returned until the aggression in Gaza ends and [the Israeli army] withdraws from Gaza," he said.

Sinwar, named as the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, was killed in southern Gaza by an Israeli strike on October 17.

Sinwar was elected leader of the group after the killing of Ismael Haniyeh in July, in a suspected Israeli attack in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Before assuming leadership of Hamas, Sinwar had headed the group's armed wing.

Otherwise, during the attack on October 7 last year, Hamas killed close to 1,200 people – mostly civilians – in southern Israel and kidnapped close to 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza./ REL
