UN warns Israel against forcibly transferring civilians from northern Gaza

United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk warned Israel that any "forcible and large-scale transfer" of civilians from northern Gaza would constitute a war crime unless it was done for "necessary military reasons." .

"The evacuation orders being issued by Israel appear to be designed to completely cut off northern Gaza from the rest of the territory," Turk said during a press conference at UN headquarters in New York.

"While the bombing and other attacks continue, there are serious concerns about a large-scale forced transfer of civilians that does not meet the requirements under international law for evacuation on military grounds," he said.

"Forcibly transferring a large part of the population of northern Gaza would constitute a war crime."

Israel is continuing the offensive against Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in Gaza, since this group attacked Israel on October 7 last year.

During the Hamas attack on Israel, nearly 1,200 people were killed and nearly 250 were kidnapped.

Meanwhile, as a result of the Israeli retaliatory offensive in Gaza, more than 42,000 people have been killed.

The Israeli army has intensified its operations in the past ten days in northern Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people are trapped in the middle of the fighting. In this part, it has also become difficult to send humanitarian aid.

"I call on Israel to immediately facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, which is necessary to reach all parts of Gaza," Turk said.

Israel has said it aims to destroy Hamas, which rules Gaza. On October 17, Israeli authorities confirmed that during a military operation in Gaza they killed the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar. He is the second leader of the group to be killed by Israel in less than three months./REL
