The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, announced on Wednesday that the US Government will suspend financial aid worth more than 95 million dollars to the Government of Georgia.

Blinken said that the suspension is related to "the anti-democratic actions and false statements of the Georgian Government", which "are not in accordance with the conditions for membership in the EU and NATO".

While aid to the Government is suspended, the United States will continue to support programs and activities in Georgia that strengthen democracy, the rule of law, independent media and economic development, he said.

The European Union suspended aid to Georgia's Ministry of Defense on July 9.

In June, the Parliament of Georgia passed a law on "foreign agents", which Washington describes as undemocratic.

The law requires organizations that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from outside countries to register as agents of foreign influence. It was criticized by domestic parties and the West, who say the law is inspired by a similar Russian law to crack down on opponents.

In May, the United States imposed a visa regime and said that bilateral cooperation with Georgia will be reviewed./ REL
