Most of Germany's favorite beers are now available without alcohol.

Germany's Federal Statistics Office, Destatis, released a new report on Tuesday highlighting that the country's consumers are increasingly turning to non-alcoholic varieties for their after-work or weekend beers.

Over the past ten years, the production of alcohol-free beer has doubled in Germany. In 2023, this represented around 556 million liters and 548 million euros in turnover.

The new statistics were released to mark International Beer Day, which takes place on August 2.

Destatis also notes that production of low-alcohol drinks, such as Radler, a mix of beer and lemonade, has also increased, from 328 million liters in 2013 to 363 million liters in 2023.

However, the report specifies that in Germany the production of beer with alcohol remains much higher than that of beer without alcohol. Compared to its European neighbors, Germany is still considered a "high consumption" country in terms of alcohol consumption. The average annual consumption of pure alcohol in Germany is 10 liters per person. 8 million people in Germany are considered to consume a dangerous amount of alcohol and between 1.6 and 1.8 million are considered alcoholics.

Beer prices are rising significantly

That doesn't mean all is well for Germany's roughly 1,500 breweries, which continue to feel the effects of inflation. According to data analytics company Statista, the average price of beer has increased to the maximum between 2022 and 2023, with a historic increase of 11.6%.
