Izraeli shënjestron komandantin e lartë të Hezbollahut në

Israel targeted a top Hezbollah commander in an airstrike south of Beirut late Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it was a revenge attack for a rocket attack three days earlier that killed 12 children and teenagers.

A loud bang was heard and a plume of smoke was seen over the southern suburbs of Beirut - which are a stronghold of the Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah - at around 19:40 on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

A senior security source in Lebanon said a senior Hezbollah commander was targeted in the airstrike and that nothing is known about his fate.

Beirut has been anxious for several days now, awaiting an Israeli airstrike in response to a rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday that killed 12 young men on a soccer field in Druze village.

Hezbollah denied involvement in that attack.

In a press release, the Israeli military said it had carried out "a targeted attack in Beirut against a commander responsible for the killing of children in Majdal Shams and the killing of a number of Israeli civilians".

Escalation concerns

While diplomats are trying to prevent escalation, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he does not believe war between Hezbollah and Israel is imminent, although he said he remains concerned about possible escalation. Hezbollah and Israel, which last fought a major war in 2006, have exchanged fire since the Gaza war erupted last October, after Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in what it said was solidarity with the palestinians.

The fighting between them has mostly been limited to the border and both sides have hinted in the past that they do not seek war with each other, despite the fact that the conflict has fueled fears of the risk of a full-scale war between them./ Rel
