The United States has serious concerns that the results published by Venezuela's election authority, which declare President Nicolas Maduro the winner of a third term, do not reflect the votes of the people, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday.

Just minutes after the authority said Maduro had won the presidential election, Blinken interrupted a speech at a meeting of Indo-Pacific nations to comment on the developments.

"We have seen the announcement of the Electoral Commission of Venezuela. We have serious concerns that the results do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people," said Blinken.

He said that the international community is closely watching the developments there and will respond.

"It is very important that each vote is counted accurately and transparently, that election officials immediately share the information with opposition and election observers without any delay, and that the election authorities publish the detailed vote tables," he said. Venezuela's National Electoral Council said Maduro won the election with 51 percent of the vote, despite polls predicting a victory for the opposition.

This body should be independent, but the opposition suspects that it acts in favor of the government.

A poll by Edison Research, the well-known institute for election polls in the United States, predicted that the opposition would win 65 percent of the vote, while Maduro 31 percent.

Washington, which has opposed Maduro's re-election as head of state in 2018, lifted sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry in October last year in response to a deal Maduro made with opposition parties.

Some time later, Washington reinstated the sanctions, due to what it called actions that threatened the democratic vote, and said that it will evaluate the sanctions policy, depending on the progress of the elections./ Rel
