Vice President Kamala Harris' new economic plan is being presented as both an opportunity and a danger for the Democratic presidential nominee.

Shortly after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race a week ago, Vice President Harris began crafting her own economic plan, emphasizing ending child poverty, strengthening unions, reducing health care costs and care for children, as well as in defense of retirement with dignity.

During speeches in Wisconsin, Indiana or Texas, she avoided using the word "inflation", which has been the biggest challenge for President Biden's administration and which forced him to repeatedly acknowledge in his speeches the consequences that voters are experiencing, while face higher expenses for food, fuel, buying houses and cars.

Vice President Harris is giving top priority to what she says is expected in the future.

"In our vision of the future, we envision a place where every person has the opportunity not only to succeed, but to thrive—a future where no child has to live in poverty, where every seniors can retire with dignity and where every worker is free to join a union," Vice President Harris said Thursday while speaking to the American Federation of Teachers.

But Republicans moved quickly to try to blame Ms. Harris for inflation, which until recently was blamed on President Biden. They are pointing to the growing impact of high prices under the Democratic administration.

Labor Department data shows that prices of consumer goods have risen 19.2 percent since President Biden took office, while median incomes have risen 16.9 percent.

Republican leaders are now openly saying that Vice President Harris is responsible for inflation, without giving further details of how she got there, beyond just the fact that she is the Vice President of the country.

"Vice President Harris has responsibility for the record of this administration," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. "Her traces are found along all the failures of the last four years."

Current and former officials who have worked with Ms. Harris have said in interviews that they do not think the inflation criticism will affect her candidacy, as for many voters she represents a new voice after nearly eight years with former President Trump. or with President Biden in the Oval Office.

It seems now is the right time for Ms. Harris to revise her policies on economic matters.

Some of the officials said Ms. Harris was likely to stick with President Biden's 2025 budget proposal and plans to raise corporate taxes to 28 percent, from the 21 percent set during the tax reform by former President Trump.

Her emergence as a possible Democratic candidate for president also coincided with some positive news about the economy.

The Department of Commerce announced on Thursday that the annual growth of the economy was at 2.8% during the second quarter. On Friday, the Department announced that inflation measured through personal consumption expenditures eased to 2.5 percent, while financial markets expect the Federal Reserve to decide on the interest rate cut in September./ VOA
