Trump praises warm relationship with Netanyahu

The former American president, Donald Trump, has praised the warm relationship with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, after a meeting they held at the Trump resort in Florida.

Netanyahu met with Trump, the Republican candidate for president in the November US elections, a day after he met with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also running for the presidency.

Trump has criticized Harris, who has expressed her concerns about the high number of Palestinian casualties in Gaza as Israel continues its military campaign, which is now in its ninth month.

"I think her statements were rude," Trump said.

Netanyahu has said he hopes the trip to the US will result in a quicker ceasefire agreement.

"I hope so, but time will tell," he told reporters. Trump has rejected suggestions that there are tensions with Netanyahu, after he criticized the Israeli prime minister because Israeli security forces have failed to prevent Hamas from carrying out the October 7 attack.

Militants from Hamas - the Palestinian group that rules Gaza, designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - carried out attacks in southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking around 240 hostages.

About 116 hostages are believed to be still in Gaza, including 42 that the Israeli military believes have been killed.

Israel then launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas.

As a result of Israel's ground and air offensive in that region, more than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, Palestinian health authorities report.

Public opinion polls show that Harris and Trump are in a close race to win the election, and this could influence world leaders such as Netanyahu - who are traditionally closer to Republicans - to show balance in attitudes towards the US .REL
