Guterres: Humanity is suffering from an "epidemic of extreme heat"

Humanity is suffering from an "epidemic of extreme heat", the head of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said on Thursday, who called for action to reduce the impact of heat waves, which are the result of climate change.

"Billions of people are facing epidemics of extreme heat - including heat waves, temperatures of almost 50 degrees Celsius," he said.

According to the European agency, Copernicus, July 21, 22 and 23 were the three hottest days ever in history, while July 22 marked the all-time record, with an average air temperature of 17.16.

Guterres has repeated his call for humanity to fight its "addiction" to crude fuels.

"Today, our focus is on the impact of extreme heat. However, let's not forget that we also have other destructive symptoms of the climate crisis: severe hurricanes, floods, droughts, forest fires, rising water levels. And the list goes on," he said.

"To overcome all these symptoms, we must fight the disease. And the disease is the burning of our only home. The disease is addiction to crude fuels. The disease is climate inaction", he said, especially asking for action by the 20 most industrialized countries in the world (G20).

Although 2023 was considered the hottest on record, 2024 could break a new record as temperatures above 40 degrees are becoming common.

In one year, the temperature of 50 degrees Celsius has been recorded in at least 10 places, in Death Valley in the United States, in Agadir in Morocco and in several places in India and China.

Extreme heat, also called the "silent killer" is believed to have been responsible for 489,000 deaths per year, in the period 2000-2019./ Rel
