France conducts major operation against cyber espionage

Authorities in France have launched a major operation to clean up computers infected by a cyber-espionage program that has affected millions of users worldwide.

"On the eve of the Olympics, this operation shows that various players in France and abroad are mobilized to fight all forms of cybercrime," Paris chief prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement on July 25.

She said investigators are targeting a network of bots suspected of infecting computers with a virus. This network is also believed to be stealing data from users, "especially for espionage purposes".

Beccuau said that analysts and investigators have managed to take control of the server that controls millions of computers infected with the virus.

The French authorities started this operation on July 18 and it is expected to last several months. According to the announcement, until now the authorities have managed to help victims in several European countries.

In the announcement of the chief prosecutor of Paris, no specific threat to the Olympic Games to be held in Paris was mentioned. But, separately, France's cyber security agency said last week that cyber attacks will be "inevitable" during the Olympics, which start on Friday./ REL
