Hamas, unity agreement with Palestinian rivals

Hamas - a terrorist group declared by the US and other powers - announced that it has signed an agreement in Beijing with other Palestinian organizations to work together for "national unity".

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who hosted senior Hamas official Musa Abu Marzouk, Fatah envoy Mahmoud al-Aloul, and emissaries from 12 other Palestinian groups, said they had agreed to establish an "interim government of national reconciliation" to govern post-war Gaza.

"Today, we signed an agreement on national unification. We are committed to it and we call for it," said Abu Marzuk after the meeting with Wang and the other envoys.

The announcement comes more than nine months after the outbreak of war in the Hamas-controlled Gaza enclave.

The trigger for this war was an attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7, which killed nearly 1,200 people - most of them civilians.

That day, the group also took over 250 people hostage - of whom 116 remain in Gaza, while the rest have either been released or killed.

According to health authorities in Gaza, Israel's retaliatory attacks on the enclave have killed more than 39,000 people - mostly civilians - since the start of the war.

China has sought to play a mediating role in the conflict, which has been further complicated by the rivalry between Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Fatah, which partially governs the occupied West Bank.

At the end of the meeting, Wang said the groups pledged "reconciliation".

"The most prominent point is the agreement to form an interim government in post-war Gaza," Wang said after signing the agreement in Beijing.

"Reconciliation is an internal matter for the Palestinian factions, but, at the same time, it cannot be achieved without the support of the international community," he added.
