The announcement of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, about the withdrawal from the presidential race is expected to dominate a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union, which is held today.

The main topics planned are the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, but Biden's decision is likely to overshadow them.

Biden has endorsed his running mate, Kamala Harris, to run in the November election against Republican rival and former president Donald Trump.

However, the final decision for the candidate will be made by his Democratic Party.

Relations between the European Union and the United States deteriorated during Trump's first term as president, which ran from 2017 to 2021.

In much of the EU there are now fears that a second term could have far-reaching consequences for the war in Ukraine, for global trade and for European security in general.

However, not all EU capitals share these concerns.

But Geert Wilders, a far-right leader in the Netherlands, posted a picture of Trump with a raised fist after the assassination attempt, along with the words "President Trump".
