Deadly riots in Bangladesh/ Supreme Court removes labor quotas

Bangladesh's top court has scrapped most quotas for government jobs that had sparked violent clashes across the country that have killed more than 100 people.

A third of public sector jobs were reserved for relatives of veterans from the country's 1971 war for independence from Pakistan.

But now the court has ruled that only 5% of the roles can be reserved for relatives of veterans.

The government has not yet responded to the decision. But a lawyer for petitioners seeking to maintain the quotas called the Supreme Court's decision "historic" and called for calm, the BBC reports.

"Let everyone accept this decision," Shah Manjurul Haque told a news conference, adding that "students should go home."

However, a spokesman for one of the student groups was quoted by AFP as saying the protests would continue.

Streets in the capital Dhaka are deserted as a second day of curfew is in effect, but sporadic clashes have been reported in some areas.

About 115 people have lost their lives, but local media report a much higher number of victims. At least 50 people were killed on Friday alone.

The decision of the Supreme Court orders that 93% of jobs in the public sector be recruited according to merit, leaving 5% for family members of veterans of the country's independence war.

The remaining 2% is reserved for people from ethnic minorities or with disabilities./CNA
