Six cases of domestic violence were registered on Saturday in Kosovo.

According to the Kosovo Police report, cases of violence occurred in Lipjan, Podujevë, Pejë and Rahovec.

In four cases, women reported experiencing physical or psychological violence from their husbands.

One case was registered for brother's violence against sister, and another for grandfather's offense against granddaughter.

Four cases of domestic violence were registered on Saturday.

The data of the Kosovo Police show that, last year, 2,460 cases of domestic violence were reported, with the victims mainly women.

According to civil society representatives, their number is much higher than the official figure.

They believe that violence is underreported for several reasons, including: social pressure on women, their lack of economic independence, and failure to inherit wealth from their parents.

According to the findings of the international organization, Amnesty International, survivors of domestic violence in Kosovo have stated that they have not seen justice, that the state has not taken care of their safety and that they fear the repetition of violence.

The Istanbul Convention - on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, which Kosovo has signed - calls for especially men and boys to contribute to the prevention of all forms of violence.

Katrina Fotovat, deputy director of the US Secretary of State's Office for Global Women's Affairs, told RFE/RL in April that US authorities have found that the best time to engage men in conversations about sexual or domestic violence gender basis, is after they become fathers.

From 2010 to April 2024, 57 women were killed in Kosovo. In most cases, the perpetrators of the murders were husbands, then fathers and sons. /REL
