Ukraine's former nationalist MP Iryna Farion, known for her fierce campaigns in defense of the Ukrainian language, died last night in hospital after being shot in the head in Lviv.

This was announced by the mayor of the city, Andriy, in Telegram Sadovy.

"Iryna Farion passed away in the hospital. The doctors did everything they could... It's scary and terrible. I always say there is no safe place in Ukraine anymore. It was a brave and brazen murder, the killer must be found!" , the mayor wrote.

Authorities are looking for the killer, while the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has said that any act of violence must be punished.

Iryna Farion, a linguist, was elected to Parliament in 2012 with the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party, but failed to retain her seat in subsequent elections. The former MP later became known for her frequent campaigns to promote the Ukrainian language and discredit Russian-speaking public officials.

In 2018, as Ukraine battled Russian-backed separatists who had seized territory in the country's east, Farion issued a call to "punch every Russian-speaking person in the jaw."/ CNA
