The Republican National Convention wrapped up Thursday night with a speech from the party's official nominee, former President Donald Trump. He remained in the audience watching the assembly all week, but on Thursday he gave his first public speech since he was the target of an assassination attempt last Saturday. VOA correspondent Carolyn Presutti brings us the sights and sounds from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Expectations on former President Donald Trump's speech were high, considering what happened five days ago, the assassination attempt against him. Donald Trump began the speech in a softer tone, his voice lower and more reflective, about the pain he said he felt at Saturday's rally.

"It was a bullet, it couldn't be anything else - I put my hand to my ear and saw that it was covered in blood," he said.

This week at the Republican National Assembly, photos from the weekend's assassination attempt reminded delegates daily of their candidate — strong, steady, and unstoppable by an assassin's bullet. He promised that he will expand this power beyond borders, around the world. Mr. Trump said that neither the war in Ukraine nor the conflict between Israel and Hamas would have happened during his term.

"A growing specter of conflict is looming over Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and all of Asia. Our planet is on the brink of World War III. This will be an unprecedented war over weapons," Mr. Trump said.

After the assassination in Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump rewrote the speech. Already the changes are visible, with more religious overtones, considering how close he came to death.

"I stand before you in this arena because of the mercy of the great Lord," he said.

Mr. Trump was found guilty by a jury in New York on 34 criminal charges. He accused President Biden's administration of misusing the justice system, increasing inflation and opening the border to criminals.

"We want people to come to our country, but they must come here legally," he declared.

Ohio Senator JD Vance, selected this week as Mr. Trump's vice-presidential candidate, was also in the assembly. Mr. Trump's wife, Melania Trump, also made her first appearance in the Assembly.

Political analysts see a Republican Party with a new and inclusive message.

"They wanted to show how much and how different they are, socioculturally or ethnically. They also wanted to show how friendly and how chaotic the Democrats are, how united they are, sending a signal that they are the choice of right," says University of Texas professor Shannon Bow O'Brien.

But Mr Trump did not deliver a strong message of unity, as analysts had expected. However, some delegates said that this was the message.

"Everyone is coming together, we are the party of the people," said a delegate from Florida.

"We are very happy about this movement, about the red wave and electing Donald Trump and JD Vance to the White House this year," says the delegate from Wisconsin.

From this Assembly, the Trump-Vance duo will carry this message to the central parts of the United States while continuing the election campaign around the country./ VOA
