The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, in an activity on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the assassination of Adolf Hitler, has declared that there is another, better Germany - liberal, democratic and constitutional. Scholz recalled, among other things, the individual responsibility of every citizen to protect democracy and the rule of law.

 The chancellor called for respect for the Constitution and the rule of law and protection of democracy.

"The constitution is practiced every day by millions of citizens in Germany," he said, adding that since July 20, 1944 and the German resistance, a lesson has been learned that no one should abandon history.

"Our democracy depends on our tireless efforts, on the commitment of each one of us," he added as he underlined the importance of "active participation of citizens" in it, and on the other hand the coexistence of citizens respecting each other. The chancellor particularly appreciates the German police, firefighters and soldiers.

Democracy depends on "resistance to all forms of hatred and extremism", the chancellor said on today's anniversary, while noting that "those who fight our democracy will always meet our determined resistance. The men and women of the resistance in Germany were not wrong : There is an alternative to the Nazi dictatorship. It is the other, all the better – liberal, constitutional democratic Germany."

Meanwhile, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, present at the event, called for the protection of democracy.

"Let's not leave the field to the noisy detractors of democracy, but to defend our democracy," he said, adding that this is the best memorial that can be dedicated to the officers of July 20, 1944 and all others who resisted. /CNA
