To guarantee additional security at its airports, Germany has approved a draft amendment to change several rules in the Aviation Security Act.

As the Federal Ministry of the Interior has explained, the draft law introduces several changes aimed at punishing unauthorized access to the airstrip and keeping prohibited items, Schengen.news.info reports.

As part of a move to provide more security at airports, Germany will punish unauthorized individuals who enter airport runways, also known as airside, with a prison sentence of up to two years or a fine.

Until now, unauthorized access to the airstrip was punishable only by a fine. However, since this measure has not been effective, the authorities decided to toughen the measure.

Commenting on the issue, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said unauthorized people entering planes cause disruption and pose a danger to many "innocent bystanders".

"The fact that there have been repeated incidents of this type recently shows that the rule of law must punish these acts more severely. That is why we are now creating a new criminal offense in place of the previous fine ", she expressed.

Thus, persons who are not authorized to enter the airport terminal and who carry prohibited items such as knives, weapons or poisonous substances, among others, are punished with imprisonment of up to five years./ CNA
