Alexander "Sasha" Kasanof has assumed the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, the US Department of State has announced.

This post was previously held by Gabriel Escobar, whose mandate ended in May of this year.

Kasanof, as of July 19, according to DASH's website, is also Deputy Assistant Secretary for Media and Public Diplomacy in DASH's European and Eurasian Affairs Bureau.

Kasanof had served as an executive assistant under former Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland and during the tenure of Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs John Bass.

Kasanof has served in Ireland, Turkmenistan, Chile and Ukraine. He even received an award for his work as a political adviser at the Embassy in Kiev during the Maidan Revolution and the subsequent Russian occupation of Ukraine.

"Sasha's assignments in Washington include: Director of the Office of Global Policy and Programs at the International Bureau of Narcotics and Law Enforcement, Deputy Director of the Executive Secretariat Staff, Director of the Office of Eastern European Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and regional conflicts", says the DASH website.

According to the biography published by DASH, Alexander "Sasha" Kasanof graduated from the National War College, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and Hamilton College.
