British Crime Agency cracks down on migrant trafficking gangs / Social media

The British authorities have taken another step to crack down on organized gangs that advertised crossing the English Channel on dinghies through social platforms. 

"Sky News" reports that it has launched a campaign on social networks where about 12,000 posts advertising boat trips to the United Kingdom by criminal groups, including Albanians, have been removed from social platforms.

"The National Crime Agency (NCA) has stepped up efforts to disrupt organized gangs that use 'online' platforms to recruit migrants to cross the Channel in small boats," SkyNews reports. 

About 3,300 posts, pages or accounts were removed or suspended by April 2023, while a campaign over the past few months has seen 9,000 posts removed, a total of almost 12,000 by the end of June.

The National Crime Agency's head of organized crime immigration threats, Dan Barcroft, said: "Social media is key to how these organized crime groups operate, so wiping them out has a direct effect on disrupting operations and their criminal activity"./CNA
