Authorities in Germany on Wednesday banned the Islamic Center of Hamburg (IZH) - an organization that, according to local intelligence, is controlled by Iran.

Previously, the police raided its premises inside the Imam Ali Shiite mosque in Hamburg, as well as in eight other countries.

The German domestic intelligence service classified it as an extremist organization.

According to a statement by the German Interior Ministry, the IZH "has aggressively and militantly spread the ideology of the Iranian 'revolutionary leader' and the so-called 'Islamic revolution'."

"It is very important for me to make a clear distinction here: we are not acting against any religion," said Germany's interior minister, Nancy Faeser.

She added that the peaceful practice of the Shiite faith will not be affected by the ban on the IZH organization.

According to the statement, four Shia mosques were closed as part of this ban.

About 150 to 200 Shiite communities live in Germany.

IZH has long been under the surveillance of German intelligence, which in its annual report in 2023 estimated that it is the most important representative of Iran in Germany, next to the embassy of this country.

There are no reliable figures for members or supporters of the group, founded in 1962./ REL
