The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics began on Friday in Paris, while organizers have warned of a spectacle like no other.

The ceremony started with a video clip showing French soccer star Zinedine Zidane running through Paris to deliver the Olympic flame.

The police are engaged in every corner of Paris, as all the eyes of the world are on France.

This is the first time that the ceremony will be held in an open environment. Nearly 7,000 athletes will sail by boat across the Seine River at the start of the ceremony.

This year, Kosovo is represented by nine athletes: five judokas, one boxer, one athlete in athletics and two swimmers.

"We are very happy, this happens once in a lifetime," said 17-year-old Elise Boukorrass to the Reuters news agency.

The weather was not on the side of the organizers, as it rained from time to time.

"The rain didn't stop my celebration at the Olympics - sport is everything to me and I will do everything to see the ceremony," said 20-year-old Flavia Merluzzi.

Details of the ceremony have been kept secret - including which artists will participate and who will be the last to carry the Olympic flame to mark the start of the Games - for security reasons./Rel
