The Council of the European Union has appointed the Estonian diplomat, Aivo Orav, to the position of the EU's special representative in Kosovo.

According to the EU, he will take office on September 1, 2024 and will have an initial term of two years, succeeding Tomas Szunyog, who has been in the post since 2020.

"Orav will have a leading role in promoting a stable, peaceful, democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo that cooperates with the region. He also supports the European perspective of Kosovo and the rapprochement with the EU. It will monitor, assist and facilitate progress in the political, economic and European priorities," the EU said.

The future head of the EU office in Kosovo has experience in the Western Balkan region, having previously served as the head of the delegation of the European bloc in North Macedonia and Montenegro.

Orav is currently the permanent representative of Estonia in the EU./ REL
