The Israeli army announced today that it launched airstrikes and struck Hezbollah targets in seven areas in southern Lebanon with artillery.

The latest cross-border attacks come in the wake of a rocket attack that killed 12 children in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, and amid international concern that clashes with Israel and Hezbollah could lead to a widening of the conflict in the region, alongside the war Israel -Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

"While we have seen more action on Israel's northern border we remain concerned about the possibility of escalation into a full-scale war," US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters during his visit to the Philippines.

"We would like to see the issues resolved through diplomatic channels," he added.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a strong response to the rocket attack and repeated accusations that Hezbollah was behind the attack. The Hezbollah group has denied responsibility for the incident.

Israel and Hezbollah have carried out mutual attacks along the border since the start of the war in Gaza.

The United Nations and other international actors have tried in recent days to reduce tensions.

On Monday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States was "confident" that an escalation of the conflict could be avoided.

The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages, according to Israeli officials.

Israel's military offensive in Gaza has killed more than 39,300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between militants and civilians in this toll./ Voa
