Ismail Haniyeh

Hamas announces that its leader, Ismail Haniyeh, has been killed in his home in Tehran in an Israeli attack.

Israel has yet to respond, but has previously vowed to "crush" the Palestinian group after the October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis.

Haniyeh's death comes hours after Israel said it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in an attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Attacks on two senior Iranian-backed militant leaders in the space of 24 hours have raised fears that the region could soon be embroiled in further conflict.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian
