Largest amount seized in 18 years/ Panamanian authorities seize 12 tons of

Panamanian authorities announced the day before that they had seized 12 tons of cocaine, a record amount in the country's history, as part of an operation carried out in the Pacific Ocean.

According to prosecutor Julio Villarreal, the operation was carried out on a ship that had left Colombia for the United States. Ten crew members, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and Nicaraguan citizens, were arrested by police.

This is the largest seizure since 2007, when 19 tons of cocaine were seized in Panamanian waters in the Pacific. Panama is a center for cocaine trafficking from South America, mainly from neighboring Colombia, with destination in the United States.

In recent months, several Latin American countries have sought to highlight their efforts to fight cartels, at a time when the United States has deployed military forces to the region with the stated aim of combating drug trafficking.

Since early September, US forces have launched air strikes in the Caribbean and the Pacific against ships suspected of belonging to drug traffickers. To date, Washington has claimed responsibility for 20 attacks that have killed 76 people, according to a count by the French News Agency (AFP) based on US government data.

Venezuela accuses the US of using the fight against drug cartels as a pretext to carry out an operation aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro and seizing the country's oil reserves. /CNA
