Trump-Putin Summit/The Strategic Importance of Alaska as a Meeting Place

Today's summit between President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, will focus on ending Putin's war in Ukraine.

The two world leaders will meet at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the outpost that crowns Anchorage to its south. It's an installation teeming with airmen and soldiers, as well as plenty of moose and bears, befitting its location on the edge of vast stretches of Alaskan wilderness.

Cold, dark and snowy in winter, the base has almost 24-hour sunshine in the height of summer.

What is the importance of Alaska as a meeting place?

Alaska, located in the northwest of the continental United States, is the closest point at which Russia and the United States are neighbors. The American state is closer to Russia than it is to the continental United States. On the Russian side, it is closer to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the region was first colonized by the old Russian Empire in the 18th century. Due to the high costs of maintaining the remote location, Moscow sold Alaska to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million, the equivalent of $162 million today. Russian influence is still widespread in the region, evident in the Russian Orthodox churches that are still present, and even in the Russian surnames of some Alaskans.

The role of Elmendorf-Richardson Base since 1940

Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base, where the meeting will be held, is also significant: It was originally an air force base built in 1940, during World War II. But its role expanded significantly during the ensuing Cold War. The US was concerned about possible Soviet attacks on Alaska, and therefore built monitors and anti-aircraft systems to counter any threat.

The air base was a key part of that mission. Air squadrons based there are still positioned to intercept any Russian aircraft that might try to enter U.S. airspace./CNA
