US-Russia Summit/ Pope Leo XIV: Let's pray for a peaceful end to the war

Pope Leo XIV prayed Friday for a peaceful end to the increasingly deafening violence of wars around the world as he celebrated a Catholic feast day on the same day as a key U.S.-Russia meeting on the war in Ukraine.

"Unfortunately, even today, we feel powerless in the face of the spread of increasingly deafening violence, insensitive to every movement of humanity," the Pope said.

The Pope prayed for hope for a peaceful future.

The first American pope in history did not directly mention Friday's meeting in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he has repeatedly called for dialogue and an end to the conflict, including talks with Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"We must not surrender to the dominance of the logic of armed conflict," the Pope said.

The Pope recalled prayers on this day, which coincides with the feast of August 15 dedicated to the Virgin Mary. /CNA
