Turkey: Many Syrian refugees are returning to their homeland

The situation in Syria is unstable, however, more and more Syrian refugees are returning from Turkey to their homeland. UNHCR: Number of returnees a sign of hope.

More than 400,000 Syrian refugees sheltering in Turkey have returned to their homeland. The Turkish Interior Ministry announced that 411,649 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria since the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December. The flow of returns accelerated over the summer with almost 140,000 returning since mid-June. According to official figures, approximately 2.5 million Syrian refugees still live in Turkey. In 2021, Turkey hosted up to 3.7 million refugees from Syria.

From Germany only 4,000

Compared to Turkey, Germany has returned far fewer refugees to Syria. According to the Interior Ministry, only 1,337 Syrians had returned to their homeland from Germany through the voluntary departure program by the end of July. The ministry spokeswoman further stated that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is closely monitoring the situation in Syria, which is very unstable. According to an investigation by the ARD Panorama program, the total number of Syrians who have returned from Germany to Syria is approximately 4,000 people.

There are currently approximately one million Syrians living in Germany, most of whom fled the war and came here in 2014 and 2015.

UNHCR: Number of returnees a sign of hope

According to the head of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, more than two million Syrian refugees have returned to their homes. The high number of returnees is "a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions," Grandi said. It shows "that we need political solutions - not another wave of instability and displacement," he stressed./ DW
