Statement by 26 European leaders: The path to peace cannot be established

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the EU is trying to set conditions for a meeting to which EU leaders have not been invited. He also called for an EU-Russia summit.

European Union leaders issued a joint statement ahead of a US-Russia summit on Friday to stress their unwavering support for Ukraine. All EU leaders signed the text except Hungary, which had reservations about the idea.

The statement by the 26 EU countries welcomed President Trump's efforts towards "ending Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and achieving a just and lasting peace and security for Ukraine."

The leaders stressed the need for a lasting peace with respect for international law, emphasizing the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"International borders should not be changed by force," the statement said.

The leaders also reflected on the upcoming Alaska summit between the US and Russia, saying that the path to peace cannot be established without Ukraine. In the past two days, the EU has been pressing for President Zelenskyy to be included in the talks. The leaders also urged that any diplomatic solution must protect the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe./ CNA
