Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska/ What's on the Agenda and What to Expect from

United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet today in Anchorage, Alaska, in an effort to find common ground that could lead to a lasting ceasefire agreement in Russia's three-year war against Ukraine.

The highly anticipated meeting is the latest in Trump's multiple, but so far unsuccessful, efforts to end the war in Ukraine and keep promises he made during the election campaign last year, when he claimed he would end the conflict within 24 hours if it was resolved.

When and where will Trump and Putin meet?

The two leaders will meet at the US Army's Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

The meeting time is scheduled for around 11:30 a.m. Alaska time, although this may change.

Accompanying members of the Russian delegation include: Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, and Special Presidential Envoy for Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev.

It is not yet clear who will accompany Trump to the meeting from the American side.

Will Zelenskyy and European leaders attend?

No, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not attend the Alaska summit, nor will European leaders.

Asked why Zelensky was not at the negotiating table, Trump berated the Ukrainian president at a White House press conference on August 11, saying that Zelensky had ruled for three years and "nothing happened" in terms of ending the war.

What's on the agenda?

The two leaders will discuss the conditions for a possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

On the agenda is what such an agreement might look like, including possible territorial concessions by each side.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Its military currently controls about 19 percent of Ukrainian land across Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, and small parts of Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk provinces.

Ukraine controlled parts of Russia's Kursk region since August 2024, but has since lost most of the territory. /CNA
