An investigative report by the online newspaper, Vyorstka, says that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to invade Ukraine in early March 2021.

According to the report, which is based on interviews with sources close to the Russian leadership, Putin made the decision after Ukrainian authorities seized assets and media outlets controlled by pro-Russian Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk in February 2021.

Preparations for the invasion, which began at the end of February, 2022, have lasted a year. According to the report, Putin made them with his close associate, billionaire Yury Kovalchuk, the main supporter of the idea.

Kovalchuk convinced Putin that the time was right to launch the invasion, as the European Union was facing internal problems and disagreements on a number of issues, Vyorstka writes.

A source told the newspaper that Putin initially planned to openly threaten Ukraine with aggression in his controversial article "On the historical unity of Russians and Ukrainians", published in July 2021. However, the threat has been withdrawn by the text at the last moment.

Another source told the newspaper that senior Russian officials discussed in December 2021 how Ukraine will be divided among major Russian corporations.

The report cites a person, whom Vyorstka calls an "old friend of Putin's," as saying that Russia's Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, supported Putin's plan because he was confident that the military operation would be swift and similar to the annexation of the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

Russia has launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

According to the United Nations, as of mid-April, at least 8,500 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and more than 14,000 injured as a result of the war.

The exact number of military casualties is unknown, but most analysts say that both sides have lost thousands of soldiers in the fighting./ REL
