New EU sanctions, "threat for Syrians affected by earthquakes"

Syria condemned European sanctions imposed on individuals and entities linked to the government of President Bashar al-Assad, arguing that the measures prevent aid from being sent to areas hit by devastating earthquakes.

The European Union on April 24 imposed sanctions on 25 individuals and eight entities, which it accused of involvement in human rights violations and drug trafficking in Syria.

The European bloc said the sanctions "are not intended to impede humanitarian aid being sent to any part of the country" hit by February's deadly earthquakes.

A Syrian Foreign Ministry official accused the EU of "repeated lies" by "claiming that sanctions against Syria do not hinder humanitarian aid deliveries or access to food and medical equipment," Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

The sanctions "are a serious threat to the lives of Syrians", said this official.

Following the example of the United States and Britain, the European bloc imposed sanctions on Samer Kamal al-Assad and Wassem Badi al-Assad, who are cousins ??of the Syrian president, accusing them of involvement in drug trafficking.

The EU also imposed sanctions on other individuals and entities, including private security companies, accusing them of helping the Syrian regime recruit fighters. Sanctions have also been imposed on a Russian engineering and construction company, Stroytransgaz, for controlling the largest phosphate mines in Syria.

On February 23, the EU announced it would ease sanctions on Syria for six months to allow aid to be sent after the devastating earthquakes. Previously, the US had taken a similar decision.

But the official of the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that such measures "had no effect at all, they were pure propaganda".

The EU has sanctioned the Syrian Government and individuals and entities associated with it since Damascus' crackdown on protests over a decade ago.

The war in Syria, which started in 2011, has left over half a million people dead and millions more displaced./ REL
