Putin asks Kim Jong Un to strengthen relations "on all fronts"

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has asked the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, to strengthen relations "on all fronts" between their two countries, in a congratulatory message for the 75th anniversary of the founding of North Korea on September 9.

"I am convinced that thanks to our joint efforts, we will continue to strengthen our bilateral relations on all fronts," Putin said in a message to Kim, according to the Kremlin.

He added that "this fully meets the demands of our peoples" and helps guarantee "stability and security on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia."

Putin emphasized that the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize the North Korean regime and said that "since then the relations between our two countries have always been based on the principles of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual respect".

It is reported that Kim Jong Un and Putin may meet soon to discuss supplying Russia with weapons in its war against Ukraine.

The White House warned on September 5 that North Korea will "pay dearly" if it supplies Russia with weapons for its war in Ukraine.

Sanctions-hit Russia is eager to secure more arms supplies from its allies to bolster its military at a time when Kiev continues its counteroffensive to liberate its territory.

US President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said last Tuesday that Pyongyang and Moscow are aiming for "leader-level talks, even face-to-face meetings" about Russia's need for armaments.

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu traveled to North Korea in July seeking to secure additional war munitions, the White House said./REL
