Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis vowed on Friday that his government would do "everything humanly possible" to help flood-hit regions as he witnessed the devastation in Karditsa up close.

A powerful storm has hit central Greece this week, accompanied by torrential rain.

Greece has faced this situation as it has been trying to recover from the summer fire season.

Meteorologists have said that the amount of rainfall these days has been unprecedented – over 700 liters per square meter in less than 24 hours.

The extent of the destruction is believed to be yet to be seen accurately.

" I understand the anger ," said Mitsokatis, referring to the criticism that the Government has failed to predict the floods and respond more quickly.

He said that the priority is the rescue of all those who are in danger, especially those who live in villages, which have been flooded by water for several days.

The owners of destroyed houses and businesses should receive help as soon as possible, the Greek Prime Minister said, among other things.

"We will find the money, be it from the state or European funds".

On Thursday, the vice-president of the European Parliament, Katarina Barley, called for the provision of aid to the countries affected by the recent storm./ REL
