At a time of heightened geopolitical rivalry between the United States, China and Russia, Indonesian President Joko Widodo made a strong appeal to leaders to ease tensions and avoid conflict in Southeast Asia. VOA White House correspondent Patsy Widakuswara reports from Jakarta.

At the meeting of East Asian states, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, underlined the need for stability in the region, in the service of progress and peace.

"I implore all the leaders of East Asian countries to transform this forum into a place where cooperation is strengthened, rather than rivalries deepened," says Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The meeting brings together the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN, and their eight partners.

The leaders of the United States, China and Russia decided not to attend the meeting and sent their representatives - Vice President Kamala Harris, Premier Li Qiang and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Ms. Harris and Mr. Li held separate meetings with ASEAN, underscoring the strength of their countries' relations with Asian countries.

“The United States has an enduring commitment to Southeast Asia and the entire Indo-Pacific region,” says Ms. Harris.

"Over the past 10 years, China and ASEAN have moved forward together and contributed to each other's success," said Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

The leaders of the meeting focused on the global impact of the war in Ukraine, North Korea's nuclear program, China's increasing aggressiveness in the South China Sea and the crisis in Myanmar.

"Conflict is exacerbating existing inequalities and vulnerabilities faced by women and girls, including sexual violence, forced marriage and human trafficking," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

The meeting concluded Ms. Harris' three-day visit to Jakarta. She has returned to Washington, while President Biden will participate in the G20 meeting in New Delhi, India./ VOA
