The mayor of the municipality of North Mitrovica, Erden Atiq, said that he has again postponed the implementation of the decision to release a municipal building from the employees of the Serbian structures.
This is the second time since August 25 that this municipality postpones the decision, amid international concerns about the possible impact of this decision on the security situation.
In the decision of the local authorities in North Mitrovica for the postponement, it is stated that the municipal inspectorate is obliged to verify the circumstances and reasons for the use of the facility in question.
"The Municipal Inspectorate must bring the Report from point 1) of this article within the time limit of 15 days, after its acceptance and after the assessment of its findings, this Decision is executed through the enforcement procedure, if the parties have refused the voluntary release of the facility ", it is stated in the municipality's decision.
In the controversial building operate four institutions that are financed by the government of Serbia: the Office for Kosovo in the Serbian government, the Center for Social Work from Vushtrri and the so-called Administrative District of Mitrovica.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said earlier on Friday that there is no discussion of the Serbs leaving the buildings to those they have never met.
He made these comments during a conference with journalists in Belgrade, on the day when the two-week deadline of the local authorities in North Mitrovica for the implementation of the decision to release a municipal building from the employees of Serbian structures was expected to expire.
Lista Serbe, the main subject of Kosovo Serbs, and officials in Belgrade have said that they will not release the municipal building managed by Serbian structures in North Mitrovica and that this issue should be resolved within the dialogue in Brussels. They called on the international factor to, as they said, "prevent the Pristina regime from escalating the situation and causing additional tensions that could have unpredictable consequences on the ground."
The European Union and the United States have asked Kosovo to coordinate on all actions related to the northern municipalities, stressing that the decision of the authorities in North Mitrovica contradicts efforts to reduce tensions in the north inhabited by a Serbian majority.
Even the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said the day before after the meeting with the President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, that it is essential to avoid further escalation of the situation in the north of Kosovo, while asked the authorities in Pristina to coordinate with international mechanisms for actions in the north.
The European Union has announced September 14 for a high-level meeting between Kosovo and Serbia in Brussels, where solutions will be sought for the current situation between the two countries.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today that dialogue is the only way to solve the problems, which according to him are accumulating. He said that Serbia has shown good will by talking with the representatives of the Serbs in Kosovo, so that they are always ready to accept dialogue, as well as on the issue of holding elections in the north.
Since the end of May of this year, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia remain high since the Albanian mayors who emerged from the April 23 elections boycotted by the Serbs, were sent to the offices of the northern municipalities with the support of the police.
The European Union seeks to reduce tensions through a plan that foresees the suspension of police operations in the north, the relocation of mayors to alternative offices and the announcement of early elections with the unconditional participation of Kosovo Serbs.
The government of Kosovo has already halved the presence of police units in municipal buildings in the north and has agreed to organize new elections. The authorities in Kosovo say that the procedure through the petition would be a more democratic way and would ensure the participation of the Serbs in the elections, but it still remains unclear whether the Serbs will use the petition to remove the current presidents./ VOA
