Greece/ Emergency work continues in the flood regions

Storm "Daniel" has destroyed entire territories. In some areas, more rain has fallen than at any time since rainfall was recorded in 1955. However, meteorologists offer hope.

Rescue operations continue intensively in the flooded areas in central Greece. Meanwhile, the number of victims has increased to ten people. Many residents fear that the number of victims may increase even more.

While hundreds of people have been evacuated from flooded areas to safe places. For the first time on Thursday, helicopters were able to fly over the flooded villages in Karditsa municipality, to rescue people from the roofs of houses, where they were trapped by water. The army has also been mobilized, penetrating the territories that have become impassable, as reported by the Greek media.

"Without any help"

The mayor of Palamas district, Giorgos Sakellariou, told Skai television that the water in the area has reached the level of two meters and residents are trapped in their houses and left "without any help". In Larissa, after several days of heavy rain, about 80 people remained isolated for more than 24 hours without food and drinking water, writes the newspaper "To Proto Thema". In the port city of Volos with about 150,000 inhabitants, the heavy rains have caused the roads to sink into the mud. The circulation of cars is prohibited, so that the rescue forces have free circulation. Power and water supplies were not working until Thursday evening.

While the rest of Greece and tourism there continue normally, in the touristic region of Pilion in Thessaly, around 500 families of vacationers have been isolated by the floods. This was announced by the deputy mayor of South Pilion, Dimitris Parrisiadis, for the newspaper "Kathimerini". The devastation is great and most of the villages have been cut off from the world around them. "I estimate that around 500 Greek families and tourists are stranded south of Pelion."

Since Monday evening (04.09.2023) Greece was affected by the low pressure storm that caused heavy rainfall. On Wednesday evening, "Daniel" arrived in the African region and caused flooding in several subway stations in Athens.
