Putin talks with Netanyahu about Syria's "territorial integrity"

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about Russia's territorial integrity during a conversation held on July 28 with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The conversation between the two leaders comes after sectarian violence erupted in southern Syria, prompting Israeli intervention.

Israel carried out airstrikes this month in Damascus and the Suwayda province inhabited by the Druze minority, saying it was acting both in support of this religious minority and to reinforce its demands for the demilitarization of southern Syria.

"Putin stressed the importance of supporting the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity" of Syria, the Kremlin said in a statement.

The Russian leader added that political stability in the state must be achieved through respecting "the interests of all religious and ethnic groups."

He also, during his conversation with Netanyahu, offered to mediate talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Russia, a close ally of Syria's long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad - who reportedly fled to Moscow with his family after being ousted from power in December - continues to have two military bases in the country.

Russia is also close to Iran, with which it has strengthened military ties during the Kremlin's offensive in Ukraine.

However, Moscow also tries to maintain good relations with Israel, where a large community of Russian descent lives./ REL
