European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the EU is ready to seek new sanctions on Iran, a stance that comes after hundreds of lives have been lost since the protests began nearly two weeks ago.
"I am prepared to propose additional sanctions in response to the regime's brutal repression of protesters," Kallas told the German daily Welt.
Kallas added that these sanctions would complement the broad range of sanctions already in place against Iran.
Kallas' initiative comes as the death toll in Iran continues to rise following demonstrations that erupted on December 28 over the collapse of the local currency, the rial.
According to a report by the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, more than 10,600 people have been detained during the two weeks of protests, while of the reported victims, 48 ??were security personnel and 496 were demonstrators. /CNA
