Wanted to share Nobel Peace Prize with Trump/ Norwegian Institute rejects

The Norwegian Nobel Institute has announced that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, divided or revoked. The decision comes after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she wanted to award the 2025 prize to US President Donald Trump.

The institute said in a statement that the decision to award the Nobel Prize is final and permanent, citing the Nobel Foundation's statutes, which do not allow for appeals. The organization also noted that the awarding committees do not comment on the actions or statements of laureates after receiving the awards.

"Once a Nobel Prize has been awarded, it cannot be revoked, divided or transferred to others. The decision is final and valid forever," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement.

Machado said sharing the award with Trump would be an act of gratitude from the Venezuelan people for the removal of Nicolas Maduro, the country's president, who was arrested last week by the United States.

Trump, who has long expressed a desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which he has linked to his diplomatic successes, said he would be honored to accept the award if Machado offered it to him during their planned meeting in Washington next week.

Machado, a former member of the National Assembly, had been barred from running in Venezuela's 2024 presidential election by Maduro's allies. She backed a rival candidate who was widely believed to have won the election, although Maduro claimed he was the winner. However, verifications of the results by independent observers showed irregularities in the official results. /CNA
