European leaders condemn killing of protesters in Iran

The leaders of Britain, Germany and France have condemned the killing of protesters in Iran and called on Tehran to "restraint" after its brutal crackdown on demonstrations against clerical rule.

At least 51 people have reportedly been killed and over 2,000 others arrested in the past two weeks, which were initially fueled by anger over the country's dire economic situation.

Iranian leaders have also cut off internet access and international phone calls in response to the protests.

In a joint statement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron said they were "deeply concerned by reports of violence by Iranian security forces" and "strongly" condemned the killing of protesters.

The leaders added: "Iranian authorities have a responsibility to protect their population and must allow freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal."

"We call on the Iranian authorities to show restraint, refrain from violence, and respect the fundamental rights of the citizens of Iran."

The protests in Iran began on December 28 and have become the most significant challenge to the government in years.

The actions have also included calls in support of Iran's pre-revolutionary leader, the Shah, whose son, Reza Pahlavi, has called for further protests.

The demonstrations have also renewed the confrontation between Iran and the US, after President Donald Trump warned that Tehran would "pay dearly" if authorities killed protesters./REL
