Berlin mayor faces calls to resign after playing tennis while city was in

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner is facing calls to resign after it was revealed that he chose to play tennis hours after a power outage caused by an arson attack. The far-left group Vulkan claimed responsibility for the attack, which cut power to around 45,000 homes and more than 2,000 businesses.

He told reporters that he had been working around the clock to mitigate the impact of the power outage and restore electricity. Meanwhile, Wegner later confirmed a report by public broadcaster RBB that he had been on a tennis court for about an hour that day with his partner, Berlin's education minister, Katharina Günther-Wünsch.

Eight months before the regional elections in which Wegner is expected to run again, claims erupted that he had lost the authority to remain in office.

The far-right Alternative for Germany party, which has been rising in polls in Berlin, said it was " bad enough that the mayor of Berlin does not take an emergency situation caused by a terrorist attack on the city's infrastructure seriously enough to cancel his tennis match."

Steffen Krach, the mayoral candidate from the Social Democrats, junior partners in Wegner's governing coalition, considered the mayor's actions unacceptable and unworthy of his office. /CNA
