Protests in Iran / Dozens of casualties and thousands arrested reported

Protests in Iran have entered their fourteenth day in a row, but there is still no concrete information regarding the exact number of people arrested in various cities in the Islamic Republic.

So far, Iranian judicial and security authorities have not provided explanations regarding the number of those arrested, where they are being held, and under what conditions. In recent days, hundreds of people have been arrested in connection with the protests in Iran, including teenagers.

Iranian Parliamentarian Abdolvahed Fayazi, a member of the Parliament's Education and Research Committee, confirmed the arrest of children and teenagers.

Before the nationwide internet shutdown, he declared in an interview with the semi-official ILNA news agency that "the judiciary will deal with them in accordance with the rights of children, adolescents and young people in the Islamic Republic."

The Human Rights News Agency (HRANA), which covers human rights developments, has reported that at least 2,311 people have been arrested in the first 13 days of the protests and that demonstrations have been recorded in 512 locations in 180 cities and towns, while the internet has been almost completely cut off in Iran.

Although there is no exact figure for the number of people killed during the protests, the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights reported 45 deaths by the 12th day of the protests, while HRANA reported at least 65 deaths. Radio Farda of Radio Free Europe has so far confirmed the identities of 35 of those killed, five of whom were under the age of 18.

The protests began on December 28th due to dissatisfaction with the economic crisis, the devaluation of the national currency, and the energy crisis. The most massive protests so far were recorded on January 8th.

The United States has expressed support for Iranian protesters, with US President Donald Trump warning authorities in Tehran that Washington will intervene if Iran kills protesters. /REL
