Former British ambassador to the US speaks out for the first time after being

Former British ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, has refused to apologise to the victims of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein or for being his friend after his conviction. Mandelson said he had paid a catastrophic price, being dismissed from his diplomatic post for his association with Epstein.

He apologized for a system that he said did not listen to Epstein's victims, but not for his relationship with the sex offender, which continued after Epstein's first conviction. He tried to distance himself from Epstein, but it was emails between them that revealed the extent of their friendship even after the conviction.

In his first television interview since being sacked from his diplomatic role in Washington in September last year, Lord Mandelson told the BBC: "I never saw anything in his life when I was with him, when I was in his homes, that would give me any reason to suspect what this evil monster was doing trying to prey on these young women. I think the problem is that, because I was gay in his circle of friends, I was kept apart from the other side of his abuse."

Asked whether he deserved to be sacked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Lord Mandelson said he was aware of the reasons for that decision.

"I understand why I was fired. I understand why he made the decision he made. But one thing I'm very clear about is that I will not seek to reopen or reopen this matter. I will move forward ," he said. 

Emails showed that Lord Mandelson told Epstein to fight for early release shortly before he was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal prison in Manhattan, New York, in August 2019, while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide. /CNA
