With hundreds of protesters killed in Iran, Trump considers military options

Protests that began in Tehran over the collapse of the Iranian currency on December 28, before spreading to cities across the country, have led to more than 500 deaths, a US-based monitoring group says.

The rule of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is in jeopardy, with demonstrators angry over devastating price hikes, along with social and political restrictions implemented by the government.

US President Donald Trump has repeated his threats to intervene, saying on Sunday that Iranian officials had called him to negotiate, but added that he may have to take action before a meeting.

He did not provide details on what military options he is considering. He is said to be briefed on specific options on Tuesday.

Iranian leaders have described the demonstrators as a group of vandals and have called on their supporters to join pro-government marches on Monday. Iran has also warned that Israeli and American military and naval facilities in the region would become legitimate targets if the US attacks./ CNA
