US Department of Homeland Security sends hundreds of additional police officers

The US Department of Homeland Security has decided to send hundreds of additional police officers to Minnesota, a day after tens of thousands of people marched in Minneapolis to protest the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Goode by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement today. The officers will be deployed today and Monday to bolster the security of Immigration, Customs and Border Patrol agents already in Minnesota.

About 2,000 federal officers have already been deployed to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, part of the largest operation ever undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security.

The new police reinforcements were scheduled to begin even as more than 1,000 protests were planned across the country this weekend against the federal government's push for deportations and the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Goode on Wednesday by an ICE officer. /CNA
