Tensions rise/ Iran warns US: We will retaliate if you attack

As violent protests continue in the country, Iran has warned it will retaliate if attacked by the United States, which has threatened to strike Iran over the killing of protesters. President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States is ready to help the Iranian people as they seek freedom.

The speaker of Iran's parliament warned that if the US attacks, both Israel and US military and naval bases in the region will become legitimate targets.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it had verified the deaths of 495 protesters and 48 security personnel across the country. The agency said another 10,600 people had been arrested during the two weeks of unrest.

Protests that began over soaring inflation are now calling for an end to the clerical rule of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran's prosecutor general said anyone who protests would be considered an "enemy of God" - a crime that carries the death penalty - while Khamenei has called the demonstrators a "group of vandals" seeking to "please" Trump.

The protests have been the most widespread since an uprising in 2022 sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who was detained by morality police on suspicion of not wearing a hijab properly. More than 550 people were killed and 20,000 others arrested by security forces over several months, according to human rights groups. /CNA
