The second assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over the weekend has raised new questions about political violence in the United States.

As VOA correspondent Katherine Gypson reports, Democratic and Republican leaders are demanding more resources for the US Secret Service Agency.

President Joe Biden condemned the acts of violence, after the second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

"In America, we resolve our disputes peacefully, at the ballot box, not with guns," Mr. Biden said.

The US Secret Service is under pressure from Congress for failing to take appropriate action during the first assassination attempt on Mr Trump on July 13. House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News that the second incident shows the need for change.

"I think there are people in the Secret Service who are really patriotic, wonderful people. The problem is leadership. We have no faith," said Mr. Johnson.

In 'Fox News', former President Trump said that the blame for the assassination lies with the rhetoric of the Democrats. But Senate Majority Leader Democrat Chuck Schumer condemned the attack on Monday.

"There is no place in America for any kind of political violence," he said.

The suspect, Ryan Routh, is accused of hiding and armed in bushes outside Mr Trump's golf course in Florida.

The 58-year-old activist is a strong supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia, which he also expressed in an interview for the 'Newsweek Romania' agency in 2022.

"This conflict is definitely black and white, good versus evil," he said.

Russia said yesterday that the assassination was a warning to the United States.

"Playing with fire has its consequences," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Law enforcement officials told reporters that additional measures after the first assassination attempt helped protect Mr. Trump on Sunday.

"The system can work because the suspect didn't even get close." We caught him and brought him to justice," said Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Suspect Routh appeared on Monday in a federal court in Florida, where he was recognized with the first charges of violating the law of possession of weapons./ VOA
